Monotype Imaging to Provide multi-PDL Solutions to Printer OEMs
PostScript and PDF Solutions from Adobe, PCL and XPS Solutions from
Monotype Imaging
WOBURN, Mass., Jul 20, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Monotype Imaging Holdings Inc. (Nasdaq: TYPE), a leading global provider of text imaging solutions, is collaborating with Adobe to deliver a comprehensive framework for deploying multi-PDL (Page Description Language) solutions in a range of printing devices. The joint effort targets OEM printer manufacturers by facilitating the licensing and implementation of multi-PDL combinations, including PostScript® 3 and PDF solutions from Adobe, and XPS and HP-compatible PCL® 5 and PCL 6 solutions developed by Monotype Imaging. The initiative is expected to reinforce the print technology offerings of both companies, and provide printer manufacturers with greater flexibility and choice.
"Our fonts and font technologies are considered standards in the laser printer industry, thanks to the relationships we've built with more than 50 printer OEMs over many years. It's a natural step to align with Adobe, a world leader in printing and imaging technologies, to direct customers toward genuine PostScript and PDF solutions," said Dave McCarthy, vice president and general manager of Monotype Imaging's Printer Imaging group. "OEMs who have licensed PostScript technology from Adobe will also be able to more easily complement their offering with XPS and PCL support, in addition to our fonts, color and printer driver solutions."
Adobe is credited with pioneering device-independent PDLs and imaging technologies. Today, PDF and PostScript remain the industry-leading imaging models for distribution and printing of final form content. "This collaboration will provide printer OEMs with a high performance, scalable PDL platform backed up by best-in-class, local support," said Raman Nagpal, senior director, Print and Scan Business at Adobe. "It will simplify product development and ongoing management for OEM partners, while increasing their available options."
Monotype Imaging's PDL imaging model is based on Advanced Raster Technology, developed internally. The ART architecture supports the company's UFST® (Universal Font Scaling Technology) font rendering subsystem, which complies with industry-standard printing languages to enable high-quality printed output. The imaging model incorporates Monotype Imaging's ColorSet™ CMM (color management module) to facilitate consistent color mapping between input and output devices. In addition, the architecture is designed to provide OEMs with flexible output formats and unique document processing options.
